Wakestock....Gone!
Well the tough decision was theirs to make and Town Council voted
4-3 against the the return of the troubled event. The Event itself
wasn't troubled but the antics of the crowds that visited during
this event were.
It came down to what the business community
wanted and what the residents wanted. Apparently the weekend of
"Boards, Bands and Bikinis" was bringing in about 6 million
dollaros to the business community but the drunken free for all
that would take place at night after the day's events were through
had the residents fuming. Two councillors in particular; (
Councillor McWilliam and Councillor Anderson ) thought that the
all out brew-ha-ha with wild drunken teens roaming the streets and
using those streets as their own private/public latrine, ripping
down Hotel Signs, engaging the police in fun filled wrestling
matches and well, you get the picture, was all right with them.
Let them rip up the place; they buy slices of Pizza and Double
Burgers!
The residents clearly wanted a stop put to all
this hooliganism and the very shady light caste on the town after
decades of trying to clean up the town's image.
Hopefully the voters will remember come
election time that these two councillors were more interested in
appeasing a small amount of business owners and not the residents
who make up the majority of the tax base.
It's ridiculous to think that by cancelling
Wakestock that the summer business' will take a big hit. The
weekend that the event was held was during the busiest part of the
summer and the rooms would have been booked to capacity anyhow.
Probably with families and couples instead of 15 drunken teens
sharing one room with two double beds. |
Let's wake up. Wakestock is a great event. The
drunken behaviour of those who take in the event are giving the
event a bad name. Either control the drunken buffoonery or cancel
the event. Well controlling large drunken crowds is expensive so
if the event organizers were not prepared to assume the lion's
share of these expenses then it's good bye.
We have to strike a balance in this town. You
can have a party type tourist town without the unruly, violent
behaviour of drunken teens with $7. in their pockets. Cancun,
Puerto Vallarta, Amsterdam etc. etc. If you can't have fun there
you're just not funny. What you won't find there is drunken teens
roaming the streets looking for a fight and tearing down hotel
signs and crapping on my front lawn. It's pretty easy. but
apparently two of our councillors don't have a clue on striking a
balance between mercantilism and rights of our residents.

Drunkstock...or Wakestock. Is it
a sporting event
or an excuse to get drunk and pass out on
the stairs of a local eating establishment? |
