WHERE TO PLAY
The summer of 08 is
here. Where
will the action be this summer? There once was a time when Wasaga
Beach was a hot spot for live bands. Well that was some time ago.
When the Dard changed ownership a few
years ago the new owners promised they would carry on the
tradition of great entertainment. Well that did not happen.
There was a time when Canada's best bands and
international acts performed at the Dard every summer. Kim
Mitchell, The Tea Party and David Wilcox
all rocked the beach. Well, the Dard is
open for food and drink but live music is not on the menu..
The Dyconia and the Beacon also use to offer up live bands on a
smaller scale but it was live and a great time was had by all.
The Dyconia has changed hands after a 50
year reign by the Hutchinson family and the new owners are going
to give Live Music a go. There is a 150-200 seat bar in the
basement of the Dyc that use run entertainment quite successfully.
In the early 90's you would have to line-up to get into the Dyc's
bar to see a variety of bands ranging from top 40 to Hard Rock to
Elvis Impersonatoirs. Oddly enough most people don't even realize
that there's a bar/venue at the Dyconia. Hopefully the new owners
will be able to get the ball rolling again and provide a fun place
to hang out with live bands being the main draw. Also this summer we have the
return of Beachfest
which feature some live Bands. Some of
the artists featured at the Beachfest include Fathead, David
Rotundo and God Made Me Funky. For a for list of bands and the
schedule please visit the Beachfest website at
www.wasagabeachfest.com.
Jazz in the Park will be back every Tuesday evening with an
assortment of lightweight Jazz bands. Don't
forget the venue has changed from the idyllic Nancy Island to the
Gazebo beside the parking lot at the RecPlex. Hopefully there will be more in store as far as live entertainment
is concerned. Check this page often as we will let you know when
new events are announced. |
The West side of Town
The Beacon on the west side
of town use to run bands every weekend, even throughout the autumn
and winter months. For the last few years though we have all been
tortured with some of the worst Karaoke this side of the Pacific.
The host at the Beacon Karaoke takes the cake for the dullest,
most confused, and talent less Karaoke M.C. anywhere. Not only
does he have no idea how to M.C. such an event, he no idea
whatsoever as how to run the equipment used in this evening of
confusion and whitenoise. This barrage of so called
entertainment takes place Thursdays through Sunday. Not
recommended. On Wednesdays at the Beacon you
can find a Jam Band hosting a so called Jam Session.
The level of talent is mediocre at best and the jammers are often
worst. Also not recommended, however it is better than the
Karaoke nights. Not Queer Funny but ha ha Funny
The Dyconia does bring in Yuk Yuks comedy once in a
while. This is your best bet for non musical entertainment during the
summer and off
season. Please phone (705-429-20000) for details and upcoming dates. Music at
Village at Blue
There are a few venues at the Village that have entertainment in
throughout the year. For the Village, the winter season is the
busy part of the year due to being right at the base of the Ski
hills. That doesn't mean that there's nothing to do throughout the
summer season. Visit their website to find out what's going on.
It's worth the short drive to the Village even if you're just
looking for a bite to eat or a little libation. |
